The great cultures of Asia were shaped by meditative, transcendental religions. Yet contact with Greek artists also influenced the emergence of Buddhist art in Pakistan (Gandhara) and India. Following an initial imageless phase in which no sculptures of Buddha were formed, rich figural depictions began to spread in the second century BC. The proud clay horse turning its head elegantly to one side dates from the heyday of Chinese art.
