Antonio Rossellino

1427 - 1479

Antonio Rossellino presumably received his training in the workshop of his considerably older brother, the architect and sculptor Bernardo Rossellino (1409–1464). Influenced by Desiderio da Settignano, Antonio worked exclusively as a sculptor in marble, executing many portrait busts and reliefs of the Madonna. In a long-lasting and successful collaboration with his brother, he carried out major commissions which also took him to Prato, Lucca and Rome. One of his most important works is the funerary monument to the Cardinal of Portugal in the church of S. Miniato al Monte in Florence, which he realized in 1461–1466. He was praised above all for the refinement of the execution and the gracefulness of his figures.
