In the early period, Greek sculptors drew from the fundamental formal principles of the Egyptians. Classical Greek art discovered the human body anew. From now on, European art was shaped by considerations of free movement, sensual form, myth and narrative. The incomparable marble statue of Athena executed by the sculptor Myron is an eloquent example. In the Late Greek (Hellenistic) phase, a bold view of reality was achieved. Artistic imagery now caricatured human beings and pointed out their weaknesses.
