Studioli

The studiolo was a room type which developed during the Renaissance to accommodate the study of and preoccupation with art. The Liebieghaus studioli are located on the villa’s attic floor, where the character of the building’s original furnishings – inspired by various styles of European art – can still be experienced today. Thematically, the rooms revolve around the passion for collecting and research cultivated by such scholars as Carl Maria Kaufmann and Adolf Furtwängler, whose collections are now among the Liebieghaus holdings

Baroque bozzetti

One special focus of the Baroque department in the Liebieghaus is the so-called bozzetto. Serving sculptors in the preparation of their finished works, bozzetti were sculpted studies of various sizes and a range of materials such as gypsum, clay, wax and wood. The Liebieghaus’s bozzetto room presents a collection of sculptural sketches from Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
